Technology-Based Assessment

Google Forms

Google Forms Tutorial Site Link

Google Forms is “simply a tool to ‘collect information quickly,” which works nicely with technology-based assessments (Blessington, 2014).  Thanks to Google Forms “extremely versatile application that is now being used by many educators to simplify and streamline class assessment,” we can add this tool to our 21st century classrooms (Blessington, 2014). Assessments created with Google Forms “can contain media such as video and images and questions can take the form of written response or multiple-choice options,” with the option of creating a flipped classroom also (Blessington, 2014). After creating an assessment with Google Forms this link can seamlessly “be shared using a unique URL that can be sent to students via email, social networks, or linked or embedded on a class website or blog” (Blessington, 2014). The students’ “results can then be viewed and collated using the summary view in Google Forms or in a table using Google Sheets” depending on your preference (Blessington, 2014). Ultimately, Google Forms in practice can be used for “1. Class Quiz or Test, 2. Peer Assessment, 3. Flipped Classroom, 4. Gathering Feedback,” and you can also “5. Switch the Role” to have your students create a “questionnaire or survey” if preferred (Blessington, 2014). There are many ways and opportunities to use Google Forms as technology-based assessment with your 21st century students.

A creative, useful, and results oriented tool for technology-based assessment is a free tool created by Survey Monkey. This assessment tool is free if you meet the survey creations minimum criteria, which offers a variety of valuable, featured options. The features or content that are most useful as an assessment tool are that one can create an “unlimited number of surveys,” have up to “10 questions per survey,” have up to “100 number of responses” per survey, have “1 user total with commenting only,” and includes “trended data and 1 filter only,” includes “24/7 customer support via email” (SurveyMonkey.com, n.d.). One can also “create quizzes and assessments with automatic scoring” (SurveyMonkey.com, n.d.). These important features and online access to free digital assessments that are electronic are truly priceless for educators to have free access to use with their students when needed throughout the school year. Survey Monkey can be used in the classroom to give a survey of any type that would be appropriate for students. Survey Monkey could also be used to assess students with a mini quiz daily at the end of the class lesson as an “exit ticket” out the door prior to their class ending that day.

As educators, if there was a “way to have the students complete a ‘game’ as” an assessment or “homework to practice, as an alternate assignment, and have it been something educational, informative and fun,” most of us would want to know how to do this (Poth, 2016). Quizizz is “where you should start to begin” this exciting journey with this new tool for “gamified homework” (Poth, 2016). With Quizizz “you can assign the Quizizz as homework” as an assessment with technology (Poth, 2016). “Students can complete the quiz as a homework assignment,” while gaining rigorous practice, “having fun in the process, and you receive the feedback that will guide your instruction” (Poth, 2016).

Standards Being Met:

Empowered Learner - ISTE-S Standard 1.c: “Use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways” (ISTE, 2016).

Teaching, Learning and Assessments - ISTE-C 2.b: “Coach teachers in and model design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences using a variety of research-based, learner-centered instructional strategies and assessment tools to address the diverse needs and interests of all students” (ISTE, 2011).

Teaching, Learning and Assessments - ISTE-C 2.f: “Coach teachers in and model incorporation of research-based best practices in instructional design when planning technology-enhanced learning experiences” (ISTE, 2011).

Kahoot is “an instant hit” as a technology-based assessment that promotes a “team mode” within the classroom (Poth, 2016). Students even enjoy creating “their own Kahoot games as homework assignments, their own review, or participation in technology showcases” (Poth, 2016). Even the “mention of Kahoot” in your 21st century classroom will bring “tremendous energy and enthusiasm” in your students (Poth, 2016). Kahoot is a “great way to engage students in a game to practice vocabulary, verbs, culture, trivia and much more” (Poth, 2016). There is a newer “feature of Kahoot,” which “is to play in Team Mode” (Poth, 2016). By playing in “Team Mode” a teacher can confirm that “all students are involved, especially in schools which are not 1:1,” and Kahoot “promotes teamwork and collaboration, problem solving, and students enjoy the activity and are learning in the process” (Poth, 2016). This “new Team Mode feature is a great way to get students working together, to make sure every student can participate,” and now it is simpler “for including everyone in the game” as an assessment (Poth, 2016).

Summary

There are multiple benefits of utilizing various types of technology-enhanced assessments that are resourceful tools for presenting “authentic cross-curricular assessment” and “summative assessment” options that are simple to locate online and made available to fellow educators through the World Wide Web (Falconi, 2015). Another added benefit to utilizing various types of technology-enhanced assessments are being able to apply engaging digital assessments in real time and gain instantaneous results while using technology tools with our 21st century learners in our digital classrooms. These technology-based resources and tools will help to make a positive difference with instructional assessment practice to benefit our 21st century students’ futures.
